The Fishermen are a group of men from Calvary who are committed to growing the church through ministry to and through men. This is accomplished through a variety of fellowship activities, social events, educational opportunities and service projects.
Educational Opportunities. Men's Breakfast meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7 a.m. in the Matthias room. A hearty breakfast is followed by a stufy of the lessons for the upcoming Sunday. Other Bible studies, such as Bible 101, comparative religions and studies designed for the unique needs of men are held throughout the year.
Fellowship Activities. Men have their own ideas of fun. We strive to meet those needs as well with activities such as card night, Vikings parties, golf, bowling, canoe trips, fishing tournaments, four-wheeler trips, pheasant hunting and special men-only retreats.
Service Projects. Men like to get their hands dirty. Service is a central part of our calling. Our men enjoy service projects such as building a shelter for Luther Crest, Fix-It Ministry, setting up the nativity for Calvary, and working on Habitat for Humanity.
Why do we need men’s ministry? In 1952 the ratio of men to women in the church was 48% to 52%. Today that ratio is 38% to 62%; 5.5 million women in the U.S. worship without their spouses. Men age 18-34 are the most unchurched group in America. Children are far more likely to continue to practice their faith when both parents are actively engaged in their faith. It is clear we are not doing enough—we need to meet men where they are and give them what they need.
